Are you a Saint or a Sinner? (Or Both?)

Tue Feb 03 2026

Listen

Saint or sinner?  Which one are you?  Which one are we?  Is it possible we could be both?   In today's episode, Brian and Jamie discuss simultaneity (the property of two or more events occuring at the exact same time) in the context of who we are, who we want to be, perhaps how others view us, how we view ourselves, and ultimately, how we choose to show up in any given moment. Brian reads the story of "The Good Samaritan," the parable told by Jesus, recounted in the gospel of Luke, highlighting the three in the short story, and their choices to pass on by, or to stop and help, and which unlikely character chose to be the "neighbor" of the unfortunate soul who had been beaten and robbed. They shift the conversation to marriage, discussing how easy it is to frame any narrative in a dualistic, "victim/villian" context, many times seeing ourselves in conflict as the victim, ignoring the possibility that we could actually be the villain.  They table the possibility that we are all both "saints and sinners" and that the devil in one ear, and the angel in the other, are both viable candidates that could be whispering at any given time, but that we have the choice to be either one. They discuss the human urge to be defensive, the coping mechanism employed when we feel the need to justify ourselves, rather than resting in our justification by faith in Christ. We hope you enjoy this episode, and that it will challenge you to see yourself and your spouse in a brand new light. As always, thanks for listening, and supporting Long Haul Marriage!
