F&*k Awareness - Let’s Activate!!
Fri Feb 06 2026
On this episode, we were joined by Jeremy Wayne McKern Music and John Kelly of Beyond the Job—a devoted family man who began his career as a firefighter at age 28. What first felt like the greatest job in the world slowly revealed its cost, taking a toll on the body, heart, and soul. During this time, John was also competing in MMA, pushing himself physically while balancing marriage and raising children.
As the years stacked up, the signs of PTSD began to surface—anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. Through trial, error, and relentless self-reflection, John started to uncover the root causes behind what so many first responders quietly experience. This physical and mental stage is far more common than most people realize.
After working through that phase and beginning to feel genuinely healthy again, others took notice. People started asking what had changed—why he looked better, felt better, and showed up differently after leaving the fire service. The biggest takeaway from John’s journey: if you wait until you’re at the very end of your rope, the climb back is much steeper and harder.
Today, John is developing a husband-and-wife program that allows couples to work through these challenges together. More connection leads to better outcomes. This proactive, holistic approach can—and should—extend into departments, workplaces, and teams, shifting the culture from reactive crisis response to prevention and long-term health.

Music Spotlight – Jeremy Wayne McKern
Our featured artist this episode was Jeremy Wayne McKern, who comes from a long line of military service. Jeremy followed that path himself, serving in the Navy and later the Reserves. Along the way, he faced repeated struggles—with family, friendships, and himself. A PTSD diagnosis became a turning point, leading him to journaling… and eventually to picking up a guitar.
Music became his outlet, his processing tool, and his way to reach others.

Featured Songs:
“Hard to See the Stars” – Dedicated to his father (Vietnam), grandfather (WWII), and all who have served and returned home to loss—of friends, family, or themselves. A raw look at how dark the world can feel after service ends.
“We Don’t Know Them All” – A reflective piece honoring those Jeremy served alongside and those still remembered.
“Honky Tonk Bound” – Inspired by Sturgill Simpson and packed with classic country music clichés—you just have to hear it.

Andrea’s Thoughts
Both Jeremy and John spoke about having a servant’s heart—that deep drive to help others. It’s something I connect with deeply and what continues to bring me back to this space. Yes, there’s action and purpose in service—but there must also be space to care for ourselves.
We say it often because it’s true: you can only give your best to others when you’ve taken care of yourself first. When you face your demons and admit your weaknesses before hitting rock bottom, you give yourself a real chance to climb back up and rediscover where you belong.
Jeremy—have confidence in your talent. Not just your music, but your ability to connect with people. Your authenticity reaches others. You could see it in John, and he saw it in you. That’s how this works.
