The Mother Wit Podcast is a show about the issues health care consumers and providers face every day as we interact with the medical system. We’ll talk about its blindspots and shortcomings, and share strategies that we can use to feel seen and heard, no matter which side of the table we sit on.Featuring intimate stories of people navigating the healthcare system throughout the perinatal period (preconception, pregnancy, postpartum, and parenthood) and the most thoughtful and innovative leaders in perinatal healthcare including midwives, nurse practitioners, International Board Certified Lactation Consultants, physical therapists, mental health specialists, fitness professionals, and birth workers of all stripes. My sincere hope is to build a strong and resilient community of consumers and healthcare providers, a place where we can come together to listen and learn from each other, to share our struggles and successes, and empower each other to envision and develop the kind of care we all deserve. Ep. 68 Hey Gen Z, its time to talk about fertility insurance -and wearables, With Dr Christy Lane, Co-founder of Flora

Mon Mar 31 2025

Listen

My guest today is Dr. Christy Lane. She is a global leader of InsurTech and a health scientist with expertise in AI, digital health, and wearable devices. She is the Co-Founder of Flora Fertility and founder of the Stanford Wearable Health Lab.  Dr. Lane has been involved in women’s health research since the 90’s, and is blazing a new path forward to combine critical components of wearable tech to help inform insurance policy to make fertility treatments more accessible. She is a mom of 3, who has gone through IVF herself therefore deeply understands the emotional and financial challenges of treatment.  She is here today to tell us about Flora which is launching this Spring. It’s a new way to think about insurance and more specifically, insurance for fertility challenges. Her expertise in wearables informs much of her work and is of great interest to me so I had to pick her brain before we wrapped up. Initially when we changed gears and started talking about wearables, I sort of siloed my usual work which I consider low tech- high touch, albeit virtual, into one category and my interest in wearable technology into another but as she talked I realized that I work with people in the perinatal period in this manner all the time. I just don’t push this on people who aren’t already into it, except for maybe the occasional CGM here or there where it could be best utilized.  I learned a lot from her today, clarified some assumptions I'd made and got all jazzed up about the work I am already doing with women around optimizing fertility, improving pregnancy outcomes and postpartum experiences, work that is inseparable from discussions about lifestyle choices and changes.
